Despite all of backlash reviews this one took at the theatre, I thought it was a very entertaining movie. I thought Jim Carrey (The Mask, Yes Man) did an adequate job, although I did think the scene with the therapist was simply put in there for Carrey to have his comedic style moment in what is supposed to be a horror/thriller. Virginia Madsen (Sideways, Firewall) is cast as Carrey’s wife, and is about par as well.
This film, directed by Joel Schumacher (The Client, Phone Boothman), who is usually very hit and miss with his films, seems to be on the hit side. The story is about Walter Sparrow, who comes across a book about a childhood detective hero, Fingerling. It is also about the obsession with the number 23. Walter starts to see similarities between himself and Fingerling, and in turn becomes obsessed with the number 23 and is determined to find the author of the book to find out more information.
Although there were no really outstanding performances here, to me this was still a very intriguing and thought provoking thriller. Not the best ever made, nor the worst either. Don’t let the critics scare you away from this one. It is worth watching once
